Course Description:

You will study the major 20th century turning points in American History.  Following a review of the nation’s democratic beginnings, students will build upon the themes they learned in their tenth grade World History class to better understand the emergence and impact of new technology and global economics on the United States.  They will also examine the social and cultural effects of the United States rise to becoming a major world power.  Emphasis is placed on the expanding role of the federal government, major social changes, and a set of freedoms and political principles basic to citizenship in the global society.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

1)   Be able to identify the effects of persons and ideas in major historical eras in the development of the nation and link them to modern interpretations of the past,

2)   Develop an understanding of current issues in American politics and relate them to their historic, geographic, cultural, political, and economic contexts,

3)   Trace the founding, development, and evolution of democracy in the United States,

4)   Examine the continuing struggle of Americans to achieve basic rights and freedoms and attain true equality,

5)   Research and write a paper using MLA style.

What is history and why should we study it?

What are America’s founding ideals and why are they important?

How has geography influenced the development of the United States?

What is the proper role of the federal government?

How has the growth of industry shaped the United States?

What opportunities and hardships has war created for Americans?

How have US foreign policy decisions met the challenges of the global age?

What are the debates that have arisen since 9/11 about the need to balance security while preserving American ideals?

iPads: All school policies regarding iPads will be enforced, please see the student handbook for details.  These policies may be expanded upon within this classroom as the year goes on.  All students must bring their iPads fully charged to school each and every day.

Grading Breakdown:

First semester:

40% daily activities, class assignments, homework, notebook

40% chapter tests and quizzes

20% final exam

Second Semester:

30% daily activities, class assignments, homework, notebook

30% chapter tests and quizzes

20% research paper

20% final exam

Classroom Rules and Expectations: 

Each member of your class is an important part of the classroom atmosphere.  Student conduct is expected to reflect integrity, honor, and good citizenship.  Any form of academic dishonesty or inappropriate behavior will require the teacher and the administration to assess such penalties deemed necessary and appropriate.  You are expected to be polite, courteous, and respectful to all class members and teachers.  At no time shall anything interfere with my right to teach and a student’s right to learn.  You will only be warned once, followed by notification to your parents.
