Course Description

This course is a study and practice of strategies for supporting and maintaining the shared vision and mission for student leadership within the Cathedral Catholic High School community. This course provides an opportunity for students to learn about various theories of leadership and teamwork, models of leadership organization, and strategies of communicating effectively in a leadership-team capacity.


Course Objectives

Students in this class will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of their role as a leader of a team and clarify the roles and responsibilities of individuals within the school.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the mission and core values of Cathedral Catholic High School.
  • Demonstrate responsiveness to school community and groups and generate support through effective communication.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how to work with leaders in the school and community to influence policies and agendas that benefit students.


Course Requirements

Attendance: Students are required to attend class. Regular and punctual attendance at all classes in which a student is registered is considered essential to optimum academic achievement. Students will receive a participation grade for each class period.  Students are allowed three absences (


Students are also expected to actively participate in all of the ASB events and activities outside of class. A student’s preparation for and active contribution to the functions and activities is an essential element for the success of the organization.


In the event that a student is unable to attend a class meeting, function, or activity associated with the course, he/she must submit in writing a Request for Absence at least 24 hours in advance. In the case of illness, the student must communicate his/her situation to Ms. Lagrimas as soon as possible.  Students are allowed two event absences (pre-approved or due to illness), subsequent absences will me given a participation grade of zero.


Please note that ASB students should make themselves available when necessary and within reason for the following events and times.

  • Before and after school hours
  • During lunch for lunch-time activities
  • Preparation for and attendance at various ASB activities/events

(Attendance at the following events is MANDATORY, dates are subject to change)

  • Fall Friday Night Lights (August 29, 2014 and other dates TBA)
  • Open House (October 4, 2014)
  • Homecoming week and weekend (October 13-18, 2014)
  • Entrance Exam (January24, 2015)
  • Winter Formal (February 7, 2015)

Citizenship: Students must maintain good disciplinary standing with faculty and staff.

ASB students are expected to be good citizens who . . .

  • model and promote trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • respect authority, property, and the rights of others.
  • avoid confrontation and any activity that has the potential to cause a verbal or physical conflict.
  • maintain standards of integrity and responsibility.
  • maintain a safe school environment.


An accrual of more than 5 detentions or a suspension may disqualify and/or be cause for removal from the ASB office/position.

The Director of Activities reserves the right to remove a student from office based on conduct that does not reflect CCHS leadership values.


Participation: Students are expected to interact in a respectful, professional, and caring manner with the Facilitator, Ms. Lagrimas, and all other students in the class.  Students are also expected to come prepared to discuss appropriate topics and actively engage in group activities and discussions.


Assignments/Presentations: All assignments and presentations will be due at the beginning of class. No credit will be given for work turned in after the time of collection/presentation. In the case of an excused absence, it is a student’s responsibility to determine what work has been missed. Absent work must be turned in by the next class day. If a student does not make up the work within the time allotted, a zero (“0”) grade will be recorded for that assignment. Assignments can be found online at or on the iTunes U course. If parents would like access to the iTunes U course, please feel free to email me so that I may give you the steps for enrollment.


Academic Eligibility

Student will maintain at least a 2.85 GPA – any student who becomes academically ineligible during his/her ASB term will be removed from the ASB office/position in addition to the Leadership and Education Development course.
