English 3

Course Description

English 3 is a yearlong, required, college preparatory course for juniors.  Students examine the works of significant American works. This course will help students develop and practice their critical thinking and communication skills by evaluating and analyzing readings, then articulating their ideas in class discussions, formal literary analysis essays and informal short response pieces.  Students will practice and refine their writing skills by engaging in process-oriented writing (drafting and revision).  Students will also practice using academic research skills (the Big Six) to plan and produce an MLA documented final product that reflects their understanding of academic research and analytic writing.  Students will use technology to create projects that demonstrate their understanding of the ideas they are studying. Finally, this course will enhance students' grammar and vocabulary skills helping them become better written and oral communicators while also improving their performance on the PSAT, SAT, and ACT tests.

Dear English 3 and AVID 9 Parents and Students,

I am so excited to be working with you this 2015-16 school year! I love teaching high school and challenging myself to meet the unique learning needs and styles of each student. This year I will be teaching English 3, American Literature, and AVID 9: Foundations of Becoming Your Best Student.

As some of you may know, my husband and I are expecting our first baby any day now! I am scheduled to be here at school until August 21, 2015, although I could start my leave earlier if our little guy decides to come early. If you have any questions or would like to touch base with me before then, you can email me at I am scheduled to be back to work by November 20, 2015.

My long term sub will be Mrs. Lynn Hadley. Some of you might already know Lynn. She covered for Mrs. Amy Balelo this past year when Ms. Balelo had her baby and for Mrs. Christen Tedrow-Harrison when she took her maternity leave a couple of years ago. Mrs. Hadley has been teaching English and Speech for more than 20 years and has been a long time member of the Uni/Cathedral Catholic family. I have been working with Mrs. Hadley over the summer to ensure a seamless transition, and I feel so blessed to have such a talented teacher cover my classes. If you haven’t gotten to meet her, you will have a chance to do so at Back to School Night—August 27, 2015 at 7:00 p.m.

Since Mrs. Hadley will be in charge of the courses in my absence, it is best you contact her directly during that time (August 24 – November 19). You can reach her at:, and her phone number will be my same number: (858) 523-4000, ext. 1219. I will be happy to assist you upon my return.

I look forward to meeting you during the school year and working with your students!
